Kevin Harwell Valedictorian

A little bit of sibling rivalry was the motivation behind Kevin Harwell’s goal to be Southaven High School’s valedictorian. It worked. "My sister was valedictorian four years ago, and I couldn’t let her beat me," said the 17-year-old Harwell, who is ranked No. 1 in a class of 270 and who carries a 4.3 grade point average. "I don’t like to fail, and if I’m going to do something I’m going to do it right." Harwell’s sister, Christy, graduated four years ago, and his parents are Marty and Susan Harwell. Kevin Harwell plans to attend Belhaven College and pursue a Biblical studies major. For now, he is serving as president of the Fellowship of Christian Students, a peer counselor and a member of the National Honor Society.

The school’s salutatorian is 18-year-old Amber Greenway, who admitted to a bit of rivalry as well – with Harwell. The two often try to outscore one another on their tests and their report cards. "It’s always great when I score higher than him," said Greenway, who plays softball and soccer. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish club and the leadership team of the Fellowship of Christian Students. With a grade-point average of 4.25, she is ranked No. 2 in the class. Greenway is hoping to play softball at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark.

Southaven’s STAR student, who is the highest scorer on ACT tests with a 93 or above average, is Ben Brownfield. "I guess I feel relieved that hard work does pay off," he said.
